How Does Orthokeratology Work?

Orthokeratology is an effective treatment to control refractive errors. This revolutionary technology uses oxygen-permeable rigid contact lenses to improve vision by reshaping the cornea. Ortho-k lenses work by reshaping the center of the cornea, changing how light enters the eye. Most ortho-k lenses are worn overnight and removed during the day. When ortho-k lenses are removed, the cornea maintains its shape for up to 72 hours and vision is corrected without the need for glasses.

What to Expect from Orthokeratology?

Ortho-k lenses require a contact lens exam and fitting, just like regular contact lenses. During this fitting, one of our eye doctors will map and measure the surface of your cornea using an instrument called a corneal topographer and then prescribe a lens that will be specially made for your eye.

While some patients notice improvements within a few days, it can take a few weeks to attain maximum vision correction. In clinical studies, most patients achieved 20/40 vision or better.
